Simple
Ways to Make a Difference This Year

1. Volunteer a morning or afternoon of your time at a nursing
home, community center, hospital, or food pantry. 2. Offer to shop for
groceries or do laundry for an elderly or shut-in neighbor. 3. Campaign
for an organization or group that works for a cause you believe in. 4.
Spend one day each month (or a special holiday) volunteering at a homeless shelter.
5. Contact your local election board and volunteer to help monitor the voting
booths on the next election. 6. Start a Giving Circle with friends or
relatives: Giving
Circles 7. Call your mom, dad, brother, sister, grandma,
aunt, uncle, cousin, friend and make a date to volunteer time TOGETHER.
8. Become a mentor at a nearby school or other educational facility.
9. Give old books, clothing, furniture to a church group, battered women's shelter
or local thrift store. 10. Spend a weekend building homes with: Habitat
for Humanity 11. Respectfully offer to help a stranger who
is physically challenged, whether blind, deaf, in a wheelchair, etc.
12. Get involved planning a charity event or fundraiser for a group or organization
that you admire. 13. Offer to coach or assist a coach with a sports team
at the local school or children's center. 14. Donate a service you enjoy
to a community center or nonprofit group, like baking, accounting, plumbing, writing,
etc. 15. Mow the grass, shovel the walk or clean house for an older or
disabled neighbor. 17. Spend a Saturday or two working at a nearby ASPCA
or animal shelter. 18. Give your Frequent Flyer Miles to: Make
a Wish Foundation 19. Buy team uniforms for the local kids'
soccer club, Little League or other teams. 20. Set up a system that collects
leftover food from local restaurants and delivers it to a food pantry or shelter.
21. Start a block or building association that looks after neighbors and
works on local issues and the environment. 22. Spend a day with your
entire family cleaning up a local park or playground. 23. Join your State's
campaign to keep roadways clean and environmentally friendly: Adopt-A-Highway
24. Teach senior residents at a nearby nursing home or long-term care facility
how to use e-mail and the Web.
