Goodies-To-Go
Love
of animals is a universal impulse, a common
ground on which all of us may meet. By loving and
understanding animals, perhaps we humans
shall come to understand each other.

One
hundred forty kilometers north of Chengdu in Chinas
Sichuan province lies the Wolong Nature Reservation Park,
a 200,000-hectare area that contains approximately ten percent
of the worlds giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).
Wolong Natural Preserve was established in 1983 and is now
the largest Giant Panda reservation park in China. Its Giant
Panda Research and Protection Center has, in less than a
decade, successfully bred 38 giant pandas, and is now planning
ways to rehabilitate the Giant Pandas into the wilderness.
China currently has 13 pregnant pandas in captivity and
more than half of them are expecting twins.
Wolongs
Giant Panda Research Center, which was the subject of a
recent Discovery HD Theater documentary called Panda
Nursery, has made important breakthroughs in the breeding
and raising of the endangered species. Panda Nursery documented
the first six months in the lives of two giant panda cubs.
The new arrivals are the product of years of focused and
often frustrating work by scientists and conservationists
in China. For the staff, especially the head of the breeding
program, ensuring their survival was a 24-hours-a-day-seven-days-a-week
task.
