AmeriCorps Week May 9-16, 2009 The choice is up to you! AmeriCorps provides a chance for people in America (and other countries) to find simple ways HERE for making a difference right in their very own neighborhoods. While signing a national service bill that expands this organization's program over the next 8 years, President Barack Obama shared some inspiring thoughts on his own experiences with service, as well as recounting a little story about a young man, an old man, and some starfish ...

On the act of serving:
"People who love their country can change it. ... That's the beauty of service: anybody can do it. You don't need to be a community organizer, a senator, a Kennedy or even a president to bring changes to people's lives."

On his own experience:
"I wouldn't be standing here today if not for the service of others or for the purpose that service gave my own life. ... I wasn't just helping people, I was receiving something in return. Through service I found a community that embraced me, citizenship that was meaningful, the direction that I had been seeking."

And finally, the story that says it all:
"An old man walking along the beach at dawn sees a young man picking up the star fish and throwing them out to sea. 'Why are you doing that?' The old man inquired. The young man explained that the starfish had been stranded on the beech by a receding tide. And would soon die in the daytime sun. 'But the beach goes on for miles,' the old man said. 'And there're so many! How can your effort make any difference?' The young man looked at the starfish in his hand and without hesitating threw it to safety in the sea. He looked up at the old man, smiled and said, 'It will make a difference to that one.'" (Read another version of this story from Inspiration Line HERE .)

Dismantle a Swing Set and Haul It Away Pennsylvania Man Does 5 Good Deeds For Strangers On Craigslist
On the eve of April Fools’ Day, a 29-year-old Pittsburgh man posted an ad on Craigslist Chicago offering “help with something this weekend” to any Chicagoans in need of an extra pair of hands for tasks small or large. His only request to those asking for help was that they “pay it forward” by doing a good deed to someone else.
That next weekend, the Samaritan drove nearly 1,200 miles to Chicago and back: (1) He delivered a car battery (retail: $99) to an out-of-work man who was also out of wheels; (2) gave a lift to a stranger who needed to pick up a truck in Des Plaines; (3) cleared out a demolished bathroom; (4) dismantled an old wooden swing set, a job that became even easier when the grateful truck owner from mission #2 decided to help; and (5) delivered fresh clothing to the Chicago Homeless Sandwich Run, which provides sandwiches, coffee, clothing and other personal items to over 800 homeless people every Sunday. And he did it all anonymously. READ MORE HERE

"Extra Money" Is Easier to Spend 6 Ways To Put Your Stimulus Money Where Your Heart Is

But not all spending has the same effect. Sure, you could go out and buy that HDTV you’ve been eyeing, but wouldn’t you rather use your tax credits to benefit your community and help your neighbors weather the economic crisis? If the answer is yes, consider the following ways to put your stimulus money to work for the greater good. READ MORE HERE
